During the last 20 years western culture has experienced a rapid increase in migration which many characterize as the root of the ever-increasing rise in violent gangs. Over the years thousands of Haitians have migrated from their beloved homeland in hope of finding a better life, though the illegal migration has gain worldwide scrutiny. Haitian gangs are quickly overshadowing the migration dilemma and have created international headlines. Thousands have united their resources in an attempt to create a revolution.
The 'Haitian Mafia' as it is often called has gone too far and should be stopped at all cost. Observers say that the Zoe Pound Gang as it is officially known was formed in 1992 in 'Lil' Haiti, Miami and has evolved into a very aggressive and well-organized group made up of Haitian nationals that have established themselves all over the world notably in South Florida and in the Bahamas. They identify themselves by wearing the Haitian flag, large jewelry with gangster like personas often in large groups, rarely alone. Nevertheless, many Haitians are quick to denounce and criticize the Zoe Pound for being a false representation of Haitian culture.
Thus, one may ask "What is Haitian Culture?" History depicts Haitian culture as being made up of a strong and united people filled with pride, the communities are typically close-knitted and very family oriented. From early on Haitian children are taught expression of self-pride, etiquette and good manners. Parents are usually strict disciplinarians and reinforce the importance of hard work and an honest living. Therefore, many Haitians are disgusted by the very thought of the Zoe Pound Gang, a misguided group of Haitians trying to make a name for themselves. Reports have circulated stating that this gang has attacked, persecuted and even assassinated their fellow people. More recently, this gang has garnered international recognition for causing destruction and countless deadly feuds with African Americans in South Florida.
According to Trenton Daniel, an American journalist, the presence of violent gangs in South Florida is in abundance but he accentuated that the Haitian gang has developed distinctive features setting them apart from their counterparts. Some of the more commonly recognizable characteristics are automatic weapons, power-bestowing amulets and extreme violence. It has also been alleged that the Haitian gangs incorporate aspects of Voodoo in order to maintain their quest for supremacy. Additional reports suggest that a single leader does not rule the Zoe Pound, unlike many other gangs, rather the mob is governed by a committee, 'therefore the group doesn't suffer major setback if the leader is taken out.' Such a structure has made it even more exigent for the Justice Department who vowed in early May 2007 to spend nearly $50 million to combat gangs and guns on the streets.
Many consider the Miami based Zoe Pound gang to be more powerful than the Black Mafia Family; in fact, the gang is regarded as one of the most dangerous black criminal organization in the world. It is reported that the Zoe Pound's main sources of income is obtained from drugs, gambling and prostitution. To be initiated into this gang one must be of 100% Haitian parentage (both parents) moreover, one must undergo paramilitary training sessions (all recruits). During these training sessions the recruits are also trained hand-to-hand combat. The gang has invested and set aside millions just for recruitment, recently the Miami Time reported that the gang spent 'big dollars' in recruiting trained ex-militants and ex-officers to serve as trainers of their intense program. It is feared that the Zoe Pound is so powerful that they threaten, bribe and blackmail who ever is in their way.
Similarly, the Bahamas is no exception. According to Raymond Gibson, Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Crime and Intelligence, "There is a Zoe Pound group in The Bahamas; there's no doubt about that. We've identified certain group leaders and they are being targeted and monitored. Most of them are Haitian-Bahamians." Juan McCartney a local reporter in a Nassau Guardian editorial suggested that more than 15,000 Bahamian high school students are involved in gangs according to his research. The Zoe Pound is slowly evolving and is more coveted than Raiders, Gun Dawgs, and Hoyas. Law enforcers have identified several operation headquarters throughout New Providence where the gang allegedly operates. Most of the areas are often 'ghettos-like' areas such as Carmichael, Fox Hill and even The Grove.
Does this mean that Haitian Bahamians that display pride for their heritage are members of the Zoe Pound Gang? Haitians are known to be a very patriotic group of people easily distinguishable. The Zoe Pound gang however aim is to inflict fear and cause havoc. Unfortunately, this group has really damaged and tarnished the Haitian identity while this so, one can show appreciation and pride for their Haitian heritage without being a part of this social upheaval. Identity restoration and public relation is a necessity and must happen now. The young and old must combine their resources in order for change to take effect. Like Dr. Martin Luther King said we must rise above our fears and personal endeavors and stand for what is right, we must work alongside the law enforcers to combat the social killer. "An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity."
